Welcome Back Week End...Grand Lake Casino Night Saturday, March 7th, 2009

Cherokee Yacht Club on South Grand Lake will host Casino Night 2009 during Grand Lake Welcome Back Weekend, Saturday, March 7th at 7 p.m. For those of you who enjoy , “The rest of the story”

Here is the history on the origin of Welcome Back Weekend. This event was started in March of 1992, by Terry Frost, Owner of Cherokee Yacht Club. The weekend originally started with a poker run on Saturday and the showing of the hands on Sunday. Grand Lakers’ Terry Frost and the late Barbara Connor came up with the idea of incorporating a Chamber sponsored “Casino Night”, which became an instant success.The idea behind Welcome Back Weekend is to get you back on the lake so you can enjoy Grand Lake more of the year. The event is not just a party anymore; it has come to signify the beginning of boating season on Grand Lake . The professionals will bring in Vegas style Black Jack, Craps and Roulette as well as entertainment provided by Left On Harvard, a Grand Lake Favorite! We will have a silent auction, and a live auction conducted by JB Robison Auctions, beginning at 9 p.m. For all of you who participate in the poker run during the day, admission to the event gets you one wild card to add to your other five cards. You have to come to the event to receive the card, so make sure you don’t miss this opportunity to complete your winning hand at Casino Night 2009. We will have Vegas Style Show Girls, games, live music, wild cards, live and silent auction and a GREAT TIME. Friday March 6 Grand Lake Live radio broadcast on FM 96.1 will be presented from “Hookers” from 5pm to 7 pm. Grand Lake Annual Boat Show in Grove, OK March 13-15

Grand Lake Annual Boat Show in Grove Hosted by the Grand Lake Associasion

12th Annual Grand Lake Boat & Sport Show

Boats of all makes, shapes and sizes—recreational vehicles big and small—dock builders, boat lift manufacturers, boutique clothing, ATV’s, scooters, marine electronics, tackle, water and land toys and just about anything else you can imagine will all be found in one place—the Grove Civic Center at the 12th Grand Lake Boat and Sport Show. This increasingly popular event takes place on March 13, 14 and 15 with hours to suit everyone.

The Grand Lake show is more than just the typical boat show. Fun is the other big component of this event. For 2009 the parking lot will be turned into a “mini-lake” for remote control boats surrounded by an RC truck and car race track. Some of the RC boats travel up to 40 mph and the cars and trucks will be spinning their wheels around the race track at speeds upwards of 50 mph. If weather permits, the RC planes will be demonstrating aerial acrobatics.

Hourly prize drawings, musical entertainment, local dance groups and much more has been planned to add to the fun while viewing the latest in water craft and recreational vehicles.

Exhibitors include Arrowhead Boat Sales, Backyard Wildlife Habitat, Boat Floaters, Cell-Tec, Charlotte’s Purses, Coldwell Banker-Shangri La Realty, Emu Only, Good Watercraft, Grand Lake Boat Sales, Grand Lake Coast Guard Unit, Grand Lake Sail & Power Squadron, Grand Outdoors, GRDA, Honey Creek Landing Marina, Howard’s Bait & Tackle, Indian Hills Marina, Jack’s RC Hobby Shop, Jerry‘s Dock, La Isla Enterprises, Lake Shore Trams, Modular Concrete Docks, Monkey Island Marine Electronics, Nichols Marine, Oklahoma Boat Lifts, Ruesch Motor Company, Santa’s Old Broads, Serenity Resort, Signs by Sikorski, Spring Valley Ranch, and Dave’s Claremore RV’s.

Admission is just $3.00 for adults, kids 16 and under is free. All outside activities are free. Show hours are Friday from noon until 5:00 pm, Saturday 10:00 am to 7:00 pm, Sunday 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Arrowhead Hospitality Sweet at Tulsa Boat Show

The Tulsa Boat Show is the 5th largest boat and travel show in the country. It happens every year at this time and is a signal for everyone to get ready for lake fun. The Grand Lake presence accounts for about 60 % of this show which covers a couple of acres and is all indoors. There is every kind of boat you could imagine as well as travel trailers, campers and motor homes. Harley Davidson motorcycles, kayaks, fishing equipment and all sorts of information and brochures for Oklahoma State Parks, Real Estate and more.

A number of Grand Lakers and members of the Grand Lake Area Chamber of Commerce chartered a bus to to see the show one evening and have some fun. When we

arrived we first went to the Arrowhead Marina, Boat Sales and Yacht Club hospitality suite to have a little snack before spreading out to see all the sights.

The event reminds us that spring is quickly coming. In fact the temperature at Grand Lake is going to get into the 70′s today. The publisher Brian Ruth, his boss, Sue, and the managing editor, Mike Williams orchestrate this publication so every Thursday people can pick up their free copy of the Chronicle to find out what has happened during the past week and what is in store for next week. If there is something going on at Grand lake, you will find them there and it’s very possible Bart Montgomery will take your picture. You could then be reported as being a fun person. Imagine that! You will see these guys everywhere whether it’s a Chili Cook Off, Poker Run, the Grand Lake Rally, the Pelican Festival or the annual 4th of July fireworks display at on Duck Creek.

You name it, if it has something to do with Grand Lake, they are there including public meetings with G.R.D.A. or interviewing our state representative, Doug Cox. They get involved with fund raisers as well. Brian Ruth was the chairman for the Grand Lake Rally. Mike Williams has been the master of ceremony for numerous events and festivals around Grand Lake. We sometimes wonder how they manage to get so much done because they stay so busy. It must be a labor of love, and Grand Lakers love their Chronicle.

Monkey Island fine dining is a tradition.

Every October about this time, a tradition of fine dining continues on Monkey Island, OK at the “Shebang” restaurant. This is the start of the “guest chef” night every Wednesday starting at 7:00 p.m., but people meet at six p.m. to partake of liquid refreshment to loosen lips for the fun evening of good food, conversation, and laughter. The brilliant idea was originated by the proprietor Joyce Duke who I have dubbed the “Mistress of Mischief” ( she earned it) and affectionately has been called “PITA” by friends. That is an acronym. You figure it out. She has had many great ideas over time as you will see should you spend time at Monkey Island on Grand Lake, OK. You’ll hear more about these things in this blog and will be able to see some of it on the Monkey Island Picture Show. Lets see, some of the attendees were Doug Smith and his wife, Gretchen Zumwalt Smith, Mike & Carrie Wiiliams, Mike Long, Dwayne Richardson, Tammy Botts and of course myself (Dave) & Debbie Wagenblatt amongst others. The star of the evening was Mo, Joe & Julio, (also known as Kelly Whitehead), who prepared Cuban quisine. Kelly received a standing ovation for her culinary skills. To be part of this experience reservations are required so the guest chef will know how much food to prepare.

25th Annual Pelican Festival at Grand Lake in Grove, OK Oct. 3-5

Welcome to the 25^th Annual Pelican Festival. We’re looking forward to an exciting Silver Anniversary Event and hope you’ll join us as we celebrate the return of the American White Pelican to the waters of Northeast Oklahoma’s Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees.

The festival will be held October 3-5 at the Grove Community Center located downtown at Third and Grand Streets. There will be an Art and Craft Show with outdoor booth spaces, creating a festive fall site as well as other entertainment and activities.

This year’s Pelican Festival is being put on in partnership with the Grand Lake Association and the Grove Downtown Merchants Association with the assistance of our valued sponsors.

This is a fun time and the Pelicans are here. Debbie and I drove around the lake and saw them everywhere. We stopped and took a few pictures at the Bernice State park where there were 40 or 50 Pelicans. They move around so be sure to get around to see them. Obviously, start in the Grove area around Carey Bay, Wolf Creek and up the Elk River arm of Grand Lake. Then work your way around to Monkey Island, then Bernice and the Horse Creek arm of Grand Lake. Continue on toward Ketchum, Duck Creek and the dam area. It makes for a great fall day. Hope to see you there!
